Intro to GIS and GPS

GIS and GPS are both new technologies which are quite different, yet often confused.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System.  This technology allows you to find your position accurately in 3 dimensions anywhere on the Earth.  More information is available here at the NAVSTAR GPS Homepage.

GIS stands for Geographic Information System.  GIS is the accumulation of different sets of data and there application to the real world. This data can then be applied and mapped to allow many data sets to be integrated, layered, and manipulated easily and more efficiently than conventional data bases.  More information is available here at the GIS Homepage.
